Google Meet Nicknames

  To preserve the privacy of your meet link, where students cannot enter the meeting unless a MPS staff member is in it, You should be using a Google Meet Nickname, and share the nickname and make sure to leave the meet AFTER all students have left, otherwise they can still hangout.

For example, when specialists meet, we go to meet.google.com, click “join meeting” and type in “specials” (our nickname). Class nicknames should be something like “MPS-WaitePark-McEathron” or “MPS-WaitePark-Eilen”. The nickname can be used whenever but can only be initiated by a teacher.  4/5 teachers should use the google meet link in your google classroom, but you would need to give specialists access to your google meet so we could lead it, too (nicknames would be easier for us, and families too if we are all consistent). Please copy and paste the link from google classroom into the document below (or email it to me)

if you want to make a meeting nickname into a link, you can use "meet.gooogle.com/lookup/meetingcode" where you replace nickname with your nickname. That way, the little ones can still click on something instead of needing to type in the code. The links in Google Classroom use this pattern. I have already done this for the nicknames on the document.

NOTE FOR TEACHERS

• Share the nickname with students; do not share the URL/link
• Have your students leave the Google Meet before you; they will not be able to re-join nicknamed meetings once the final participant has left
• Nicknames should be unique and can be reused

Make sure you are logged into Google with your MPS email address and password.

1. Go to meet.google.com
2. You may be asked to turn your camera and microphone on—click Allow
3. Click Join or start a meeting
4. Create and enter a nickname
5. Click Continue
6. Click Join now
